For more than 80 years, BGA students and faculty have been assigned to the Greer or Plato literary society, creating an academic and athletic rivalry that is central to BGA's day-to-day school life beginning in fourth grade. The year-long competition between the societies culminates each year with divisional Tug of Wars. The Middle School Tug is held in late spring across the creek that winds through our Glen Echo Campus.
Central to Middle School student life is the leadership of the Eighth-Grade Student Council. Comprised of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, the role of this group is to represent the student body, promote understanding between students and faculty, and encourage interest in school activities. The Student Council leads assemblies, promotes community service, organizes social activities, and puts on special events such as the Fall Carnival and Greer-Plato competitions.
Our Middle School clubs and organizations meet biweekly and have a faculty adviser who offers guidance and mentoring throughout the school year. Clubs offered can differ by semester based on student and faculty ideas and interests. Recent clubs include:

For more than 80 years, BGA students and faculty have been assigned to the Greer or Plato literary society, creating an academic and athletic rivalry that is central to BGA's day-to-day school life beginning in fourth grade. The year-long competition between the societies culminates each year with divisional Tug of Wars. The Upper School Tug is held in late spring over the banks of the Harpeth River, where crowds gather to cheer on their society and to see who winds up wet.
BGA Student Council members and Class Officers are central to the student life experience. These student leadership teams at the Upper School represent a voice for the entire student body and serve in an advisory role to the administration, promoting understanding between faculty and students and to encourage student interest in school activities.
Six elected positions serve as Class Officers for their respective grade each year. The class president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and a representative for both the Greer and Plato societies are elected annually. These officers work side-by-side with their respective faculty sponsors and with the Student Council representatives to sponsor social activities throughout the year. These students are central to leading our school spirit, morale, and extracurricular activities.
This diverse group of Upper School students undergo a rigorous application process and work with the Office of Equity & Inclusion in four distinct areas – community engagement, education/curriculum, student programming, and student and family support – to:
Spread awareness and knowledge to students and faculty while acknowledging the nuances of identity and the intersections of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, ability, religion, and age.
Create an inclusive culture at BGA.
Connect underrepresented students with student leaders and the administration.
Our student-led and student-designed clubs and organizations meet biweekly. Each club’s faculty adviser offers guidance and mentoring throughout the school year. Clubs offered can differ annually based on student interest.
