Rebecca Steynberg '20 Named Mary Campbell Easel Award Recipient
The BGA Visual Arts Department is pleased to honor senior Rebecca Steynberg with the 2019 Mary Campbell Easel Award for the first quarter.
Rebecca is currently enrolled in AP Studio Art. She has been exploring art since childhood and has only been officially enrolled in art classes since the 10th grade. This work is titled Bloom and is part of Rebecca’s “sustained investigation” of the AP portfolio. Her detailed acrylic and watercolor painting of botanical forms and the human body are intended to communicate her identity as a South African living abroad. Indigenous plants and flowers from South Africa grow from the body as an expression of a growing and changing identity. We are impressed not only with Rebecca’s skillful execution, but also with her thoughtful concept and impressive work ethic, all of which are exemplified in this work. Congratulations to Rebecca!
About the Mary Campbell Easel Award: Along with the gift of the Mary Campbell Visual Arts Center, Battle Ground Academy’s art department was also fortunate to receive several pieces of furniture and equipment from Mary Campbell’s studio. One of these was her easel. To honor Mary’s memory, it was decided that every quarter, the Visual Arts teachers would review the work of current students and choose a piece of art they feel exemplifies the qualities BGA students strive to achieve: creativity, effort, and quality. The chosen piece receives the Mary Campbell Easel Award and is displayed for the duration of the next quarter.
