Varsity Girls Soccer Wraps Up a Strong Season as State Contenders

The 2018 fall soccer season was filled with many exciting and successful milestones that put BGA soccer back on the map and road to the State Tournament. After losing six seniors from the previous year and losing a play-in match for the State Tournament, many outsiders from the BGA soccer world doubted the success of the 2018 season, but our girls soccer players had a different mindset. In fact, their display of hard work, enthusiasm, accountability, resilience and teamwork in each practice and game proved their worth as a 2018 State contender. Starting the season ranked at the bottom of a top 10 board, BGA girls’ soccer climbed the ladder each week to earn a spot in the top 5 by the end of the season. Much of this climb is due to their efforts in playing challenging matches with top Div. II-AA teams like Brentwood Academy, Baylor, Harpeth Hall, Father Ryan and maintaining an undefeated status in regular season district play. Playing teams from higher divisions prepared the BGA girls for their own divisional games with rivals like FRA, CPA, DCA, and ECS, whom they’d eventually see in regular or post season action.

An intense game was fought and witnessed in the Stewart-Campbell Stadium on the afternoon of Oct. 20th. BGA took a one goal lead in the 33rd minute and would hold this lead into halftime. An ensuing rush of attacks by ECS eventually ended in a goal for the Eagles in the 75th minute. Continuing their efforts on the attacking side, BGA just couldn’t find the back of the net and the game looked to be headed into overtime. However, in the 78th minute after an unfortunate tangle between a BGA and ECS player, BGA found themselves in an emergency defensive situation that resulted in an ECS goal. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the game, the Wildcats poured all they had remaining in their tanks to draw the game level once again, but time was not slowing down. BGA was defeated by ECS by a score of 2-1 giving the Wildcats a season record of 12-6-1. We will see this group back in action again next fall, but will sorely miss the presence and leadership of the 2018 senior class: Abigail Baur, Sophia Buskirk, Jenna Diab, Anna Quinn French, Graham Meyer, Elizabeth Ragsdale, Evan Sanders, and Emma Smith.

Notable highlights of the season include:
-Team scored 69 goals (leaders are Alyssa White (12), Kennedy Price (11), Scout Speer (8), Sara Evans (8), and Keaton Mitchell (8)
-Team assist leaders Kennedy Price (8), Keaton Mitchell (7), Sara Evans (5), and Jane Napier (5)
-Team had 9 shutouts courtesy of the efforts of all players, but most notably to starting backline consisting of GK-Anna Quinn French with 62 saves, Center backs-Abigail Baur and Graham Meyer and Outside backs-Evan Sanders and Annie Clendenin

Congratulations to the All District and All Region players:
All District - Kennedy Price, Abigail Baur, Anna Quinn French, Alyssa White
All Region - Anna Quinn French, Kennedy Price
