Education Elevated clone
At Battle Ground Academy, we talk a lot about "Education Elevated." The phrase is on banners that welcome you to campus. It's in our ads and in our view book, and it appears in our videos. But it's more than a phrase. It is the BGA experience.
Education Elevated is how our faculty members approach teaching, get to know our students, and empower them to take ownership in their education. It's in the support and encouragement our students find on the field, in the studio, on the stage, and in the classroom. It's in the opportunity that lies before them – on our campus and beyond – and their eagerness to seize it. And, it's in our graduates, who leave the Academy armed with the tools necessary to accomplish their academic, professional, and personal goals, becoming successful graduates at some of the nation's top colleges and universities.
Elevate the Craft and Practice of Teaching
At Battle Ground Academy, our teachers are empowered and inspired to create a learning community where the needs of each individual are recognized, supported, and encouraged. They focus full attention on each student every day as they grow from impressionable kindergarteners to young adults ready for independence.
Educate the Whole Child Intentionally
A BGA education involves much more than mastery of age-appropriate academic skills. As we get to know each student individually, we consider the whole child — academically, mentally, and physically — and create opportunities for deeper understanding and growth in each area.
Develop Student Agency
Student agency — the ability of students to have a voice and choice in their learning — is essential to the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to thrive in and adapt to diverse environments. BGA teaches students how to think, not what to think, and gives them the license to determine what they learn and how they learn it.
Extend Education Outside the Classroom
We understand teachable moments are everywhere and provide opportunities for our students to learn beyond the four walls of our classrooms, making learning more relevant and engaging students in the wider world.

Elevate the Craft and Practice of Teaching
We believe in the enormous potential within every child, and we know that full potential is not achieved by merely acquiring academic skills and facts. It is achieved within a community where the needs of each individual are recognized, supported and encouraged. At Battle Ground Academy, our teachers are empowered and inspired to create such a community. They focus full attention on each student every day and follow and support students as they grow from impressionable kindergarteners to young adults ready for independence.

Our 9:1 student-to-teacher ratio means we know your child’s name, interests, learning style, and motivators, and we have the flexibility to adjust our curriculum to meet each student where he or she is and take them beyond expectations. Through professional development, 100% of our faculty continuously hone essential skills and learn a variety of teaching methods to elevate the craft and practice of teaching.

Educate the whole child intentionally
A BGA education involves much more than mastery of age-appropriate academic skills. As we get to know each student individually, we consider the whole child – academically, socially, and emotionally – and create opportunities for deeper understanding and growth in each area.
Academics
Build a curriculum suited to her strengths and interests while pushing her to try new things that we know will stretch her and increase the resilience and empathy required to be a leader wherever life may take her. Individual intellectual goals.
Social and Emotional Foundations
It includes character development, social growth and awareness, individual intellectual goals, and empathy training.
Character Education
Character education is woven into the very fabric of a BGA education. Starting in kindergarten, students are introduced character development concepts. The BGA Way — the foundation of our character education — encourages respect, compassion, accountability, and resilience. The Honor Code is another foundation that carries throughout each year. Community service is an additional tenet that helps our students develop character and empathy.
Wellness
Our wellness program develops students in a holistic manner, including mental, physical, and nutritional components. We encourage and show our students how to lead healthy lifestyles that focus on true well-being as they progress from adolescence to young adulthood. We challenge the traditional concept of “wellness” in education, going beyond P.E. classes and diving into physical, emotional, and mental wellness.
Beginning in Lower School, the wellness program combines overall fitness with motor skill development and, nutrition. In Middle and Upper School, Lifetime Wellness or Athletics-based training teach the importance of physical fitness and wellness while engaging in healthy, physically active lifestyles.
The mental wellness of our students is equally important. Our Counseling Department and student advisory offer group and one-on-one support and programs that enhance the overall health and wellness of our students and families through a focus on social and emotional learning. A school counselor is available for both students and parents.
Develop Student Agency
Student agency – the ability of students to have a voice and choice in their learning – is essential in the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to thrive in and to adapt to diverse environments. It teaches students how to think, not what to think and empowers students to determine what they learn and how they learn it.
At BGA, students take an active role in shaping their future through student agency. Recognizing that each student has immense ability, it’s our faculty’s responsibility to reach each student, creating differentiated lessons that are relevant and interesting to each learner. Offering students choice of types of assignments or topics or using student input into how a project should be carried out are just a few examples of the role student agency has at BGA.
Student agency creates personalized learning and engagement, and the ownership over their own path provides motivation for students to work toward goals they find important. Along the way, we allow students to purposefully struggle while providing them the support they need to push ahead and build resilience. Our students know they can make a mistake – or miss a goal – and still have the support of their teachers.
Extend Education Outside the Classroom
We understand teachable moments are everywhere and provide opportunities for our students to learn beyond the four walls of our classrooms. Education outside the classroom can make learning more relevant and engage students in the wider world.
Learning outside the classroom takes place at every school level at BGA through:
- Community service — more than 17,000 community service hours annually
- Extracurricular activities — more than 75 extracurricular activities, including honors societies, faculty-sponsored clubs and organizations, and 29 official BGA athletic programs
- Field experiences
- Internships
- Experiential Education Grants awarded to rising 9th graders (valued at up to $5,000)
