LS Curriculum

Building on more than 125 years of excellence in education, the Battle Ground Academy experience begins in the Lower School for kindergarten through fourth-grade students. Consistent with the traditions and mission of BGA, we value learning through inquiry in a holistic approach.  All of this takes place in a caring environment that nurtures and supports our youngest learners as they master the 21st century skills essential for success. Mastery of the fundamentals is blended with critical thinking and problem solving in a vibrant academic program. Our goal is to offer an experience that cultivates a student's curiosities, intellect, and character while nurturing a love of learning and social responsibility.

A comprehensive literacy curriculum incorporates research-based methods through a Reading and Writing Workshop model as children become reflective thinkers and expressive communicators as well as skilled readers and writers. Based on a proven Singapore Math approach, our mathematics program crafts a coherent curriculum focused on deep understanding of concepts that leads to application. The science program offers hands on investigations in life, earth, and physical sciences, as well as engineering design, coding, and technology. The social studies curriculum prompts project-based learning through interactive stories and authentic experiences.

Co-curricular classes complement our core curriculum in a design that truly develops the whole child. Art develops each child's unique creative expression, supported through age-appropriate projects that explore various media. Guiance supports moral development through character education while nurturing a caring heart in service to others. Music presents a child-centered, energetic, and engaging program that encourages a love of music. The Spanish program offers opportunities to use the target language through listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The wellness program combines motor skill development, body management, balance and flexibility, and overall fitness in a program that fosters a healthy lifestyle.
