BGA US Track Athletes Headed to State Championship

The Battle Ground Academy boys and girls track and field teams traveled to FRA for the regional championship. Across three days of competition, the region's athletes vied for opportunities to compete in the State Championship. The top two finishers in each event earn automatic bids. The third and fourth place finishers are eligible for at-large bids if they have superior results to the third and fourth place finishers in East & West (eight athletes total qualify in each event).

In the field events, the girls were led by Briana DeLaughter '23, who finished as runner-up in the discus with a throw of 74'1", qualifying for State; Briana also finished sixth in the shot put. Laurel Phelps '24 hit a new personal record of 4'10" in the high jump, finishing third and qualifying for the State meet through an at-large bid. Sara Grace Harney '22 and Erica DeLaughter '24 both delivered points in the Long & Triple jumps, where they finished 7th/5th and 8th/6th, respectively. On the boys' side, Kevin Dennis '21 finished 4th in the pole vault at 8'6".

In the running events, Ashlyn Patton '23 took home the regional championship in the girls 100m hurdles with a time of 16.65. She's headed to State. The girls 4x800m relay (Lindsay Phelps '22, Sara Evans '21, Harris Cleveland '24, Keaton Mitchell '23) are the region runner-ups at 10:39.58 and will compete at State. They set a school record in the process. Laurel Phelps '24 finished 4th in the 400m (1:02.07) and qualified for State with an at-large bid. The girls 4x100m relay (Ashlyn Patton '23, Catherine Schreiber '23, Palmer Grace Snead '24, Kendall Grimes '22) finished 3rd in 52.66.

Trace Alexander '22 led the boys with a runner-up finish in the 3200m and 1600m and is headed back to the State meet. He ran a 9:46 in the 3200m and a 4:29.09 in the 1600m. Trace was also a member of the 4x800m relays, with Cole Beck Williams '21, Will Bauer '25, and Brady Zhang '22, who finished 3rd at 8:41, and qualified for State with a new school record. The boys 4x100m relay (Xavier Shaw '21, Sean Williams '22, Connor McGee '23, Miller Barnett '22) also finished 3rd at 44.25 and qualified to State as an at-large bid.

In the final team standings, the girls finished 5th, and the boys finished 4th. Both the girls and the boys 4x800m relays set new school records. The Division II-A State Championship will take place on Wednesday, May 26, at Rockvale High School in Murfreesboro.
